In natural speech, indivisible sound segments are referred to as phonemes. English language categorizes these phonemes into two types: vowels and consonants.

In English, phonemes are annotated by phonetic symbols to indicate pronunciation. Unfortunately, there's no universal standard for English phonetic notation.
